Why SEO Still Matters in an AI World

...and why your website is more important than ever!

If I had a quid for every person or every post that I’ve seen saying “SEO is dead because of AI”, I could close my business and go and live on a supersized yacht in Monaco!

Apparently, “Google is finished”.

AI has rudely come along, flexing its pecs like a Peter Andre video from the late 90’s and threatening to take Google’s crown.

It all sounds very dramatic.

And it’s also… not true.

So, let’s set things straight, shall weeee?

How AI uses the internet (and why SEO still matters)

AI tools don’t magically invent answers.

They go looking for them.

When someone asks ChatGPT, Google’s AI, or Perplexity a question, those tools pull information from existing websites, articles, guides and service pages.

AI is a bit like having the world’s fastest researcher (I’m thinking Johnny 5 from the film Short Circuit), rather than a machine that just “knows stuff”.

A white bot with blue light eyes holds a magnifying glass as it researches through a stack of books and websites whilst sat at a desk.
An AI bot researches through hundreds of websites and resources to find the answer you seek

And if your website isn’t structured properly, or your content is about as engaging as a five-page terms and conditions document, that AI researcher will simply turn on its heel, do a dramatic hair swish, and walk straight past your website.

Which is exactly why SEO still matters.

SEO is no longer just about rankings

It’s about being reference-worthy.

Old-school SEO was all about getting to page one on Google, and whilst that is still part of the plan, there is now so much more to SEO.

Now, a well-structured page with well-written and optimised content ALSO informs AI that your website is worth referencing.

This means your opportunities are not just through Google, but across the world of AI too.

But wait a sec... doesn’t AI just give answers without sending you to a website?

Good question, and yes, it does.

But the people who do click are usually:

  • Better informed.

  • Clearer on what they want.

  • Much closer to making a decision.

SEO used to send people to your website to poke around and figure things out.

But now, the AI researcher acts like a receptionist for your website and is much more likely to send your ideal clients or customers through to see you.

That’s SEO doing some bloody good filtering.

AI doesn’t think like a human, this is what it needs...

AI wants Clarity.

It’s not impressed by your clever-sounding copy, your fancy-looking graphics or the fact that you added that cool animation to your website.

When AI lands on your site, it’s scanning for:

  • Clear explanations.

  • Direct answers.

  • Visible expertise.

  • Logical structure.

If it has to work too hard to understand what you do, it moves on.

This is one reason I specialise in Wix websites. A lot of the technical heavy lifting is automatically taken care of, which helps search engines and AI read your website more easily. And when your site is easier to read, it’s far more likely to rank and be referenced.

Keep the Human Element

Although AI doesn’t think like a human, your ideal clients do!

That’s why it’s flippin’ important that within all of this optimising for AI malarkey, your content still sounds like it was written for humans.

Have empathy.

Understand their struggles, their desires and what makes them tick.

They don’t want to read robotic questions and answers; they want to feel seen, understood, and reassured by the words on your page.

If there’s one tip I could give you from my own experience, it would be to combine good SEO with human-focused content (with a side dish of good brand messaging). That’s what I guarantee with my SEO services.

Quality content builds momentum

...and this is the bit most people miss!

SEO is not a one-off task. It’s a compounding one.

Every well-written page, helpful blog, clear service explanation or FAQ does more than just “rank”.

It builds momentum.

Graphic which resembles Newton's Cradle with 3 strings with balls. The middle ball is labelled SEO, the left ball is labelled AI search and the right ball is labelled Brand authority.
The motion indicates that SEO builds momentum for AI search and Brand authority.

The more useful content you publish:

  • The easier your site becomes to understand.

  • The more confident search engines and AI become in referencing you.

  • Your brand starts to feel like a trusted authority.

  • It lands you more leads, bookings and sales.

And that’s when things start to snowball.

Your website is never “done”. Content, sub-pages, tweaks and refreshes are frequently needed to get you there! That’s why SEO packages are such a good option.

SEO, AI and brand authority work together (not separately)

Good SEO does not just help you show up in search results.

It helps:

  • AI trust your website as a source.

  • People recognise your name before they land on your site.

  • Enquiries come in warmer and better informed.

Over time, this is what shifts you from: “just another option” to “the preferred option”.

And that trust does not come from hacks, trends or chasing algorithms.

It comes from clarity, consistency and genuinely helpful content.

So no, SEO isn’t dead

It has just stopped rewarding websites that aren’t producing genuinely good content.

So, ask yourself this.

Do the pages on your website:

  • Clearly explain what you do?

  • Show your unique expertise?

  • Answer real questions that potential clients have?

  • Make sense to humans, search engines and AI?
